Everything starts with leadership.
Leadership is the driver of your life, but many have been blinded and seduced by social norms, environmental factors, and pressure from others around you. Because of these strong factors, we have been caught in a trap of quick fixes and visions of grandeur that continuously send us into the deep abyss of suffering and dead ends, which usually creates feelings of anger, fear, and shame that can’t be pinpointed as to why we are having these feelings. As these feelings continue, they can manifest into larger issues such as substance abuse and mental health issues. Because society does not put an emphasis on elements of leading within and honing these skills at an early age, we become a bunch of sheep walking off the cliff of nothing. However, there are alternative ways to start to embark on the journey of coming out of the dark and into the light.
Take your leadership temperature — Start a review of your life and see if areas in your life are cold or hot. Asking yourself powerful questions to see if areas of your life are cold meaning that area is broken and not where you need it to be. If it is hot, then it is the opposite of broken. It is growing, and you get a feeling of fulfillment and happiness when thinking of it.
Setting the stage — Once you have checked your temperature in the areas of your life, start to break things down to find the root cause of the friction in that area that you feel is cold. As you do this with all the areas, you will start to see some patterns within yourself and the behavior you exhibit. This part is the most difficult part for many because you don’t want to see your flaws and past behaviors that may have been detrimental to yourself and your loved ones. However, if you can start to eat a piece of humble pie little by little and start to accept you have to start at the bottom, then you will be better prepared to make the necessary adjustments you need to make. The key is to be consistent in creating behavior that will benefit you.
Executing change — Change is difficult for all; however, it is more difficult for people that are comfortable staying in feelings and situations they are familiar with. You must have the courage to start with becoming uncomfortable a little at a time so as to create confidence and create a new mindset. As you start to tackle things piece by piece, a new mindset will start to form, which will help you. Friction in your mind will be continuous upon you to revert back to feelings and situations that you are familiar with. This will be a continuous battle, but a battle that is winnable with the weapon of awareness.
Take your leadership temperature again — Give yourself time to reflect upon what you’re doing right and what adjustments need to be made. Don’t just look at your actions but also check in with your feelings. Ask yourself powerful questions frequently to ensure you are not just going in the right direction but also feeling the way you want to feel.
Although this is only a snapshot of focus areas, it can be a shell for you to use in creating a way that works for you. You must understand you will be battling decades of programming from upbringing, social norms, environmental factors, and self-doubt. It is okay that you will not get things perfect. That is not the key. The key is to be consistent, routine, and understanding with yourself. You must have patience with yourself to progress. However, the more consistent, routine, and understanding you are with yourself, the faster your transformation can be. Also, understand your current self will not have the mindset of your past self, and that is great. But just always keep in mind the more aware you become, the faster you can succeed and be fulfilled through the discipline of leadership.
