Value-Driven Hiring: Building Success through Organizational Alignment

Prioritize Values in the Hiring Process instead of relying on just experience will save time, energy, money and your sanity

Hiring an employee is a common practice in both small and large organizations throughout the US. However, a common mistake occurs when the decision to hire a new employee is made by those in management or leadership positions. While it is reasonable for them to be involved in the hiring process, they may not always get it right. They often prioritize experience, degrees, and skills, while overlooking the most important element: values. By ensuring that the values of potential employees align with the values of the company, many organizations can prevent the negative consequences of hiring the wrong person, such as wasting time, energy, and resources on reforming or terminating an employee. Here are three reasons why values should be a primary consideration when hiring:

Conflict prevention: Hiring employees who share the same values as the company can prevent potential conflicts that may arise when an employee’s personal values conflict with the company’s values. This can result in a more harmonious and productive work environment. If such conflicts occur, they can become a cancer to the other employees, affecting productivity and culture.

Fit in organizational culture: Employees who share the same values as the company are more likely to fit in with the company culture. This can foster better collaboration, communication, and team morale, resulting in increased productivity and job satisfaction.

Enhanced organization retention: Hiring employees who share the same values as the company are more likely to be committed to the organization, which can result in lower turnover rates. This is because they are more likely to feel aligned with the company’s mission and purpose and, therefore, more likely to stay long-term.

Overall, understanding the foundational element of values when hiring can either set an organization back years or propel it to greater profitability more quickly. Establishing and embodying organizational principles such as mission, vision, and purpose is the first step in ensuring the hiring of the right employees. The second step is training the organization’s management and leadership on how to utilize the element of values when screening potential employees. Emphasis must be made at the top through awareness, training, and execution to ensure the right employees are being hired to assist the organization in achieving its goals.
